GALERÍAS CON LUMBRERAS EN EL ÁREA CENTRAL DE LA REGIÓN DE MURCIA
Abstract
We have observed that there are systems to collect, carry and distribute water from aquifers near the surface in arid and semi-arid environments of the southeast of the IberianPeninsula. These consist of horizontal wells (draining galleries), which are called ‘galleries with embrasures’ in Murcia and «qanat-s», «foggara-s» and «viaje-s de agua» (‘water trips’) elsewhere. In the central area of the Region of Murcia we have found many of these systems, some of which are still in use, in the foothills of mountain chains such as Sierra Espuña, Pedro Ponce, Cambron and Ricote, among others. The most remarkable galleries include Veto (Mula), Las Fontanicas (Bullas) La Arboleja, also called Agualeja (Aledo), Fuente de los Tornajos, also called del Puerto (Mula) and Zarzadilla (Totana). After finding and analysing these systems, we have been able to relate the ecotopological conditions of the area with its exploitation, thus emphasising the importance of these systems as water sources.Downloads
