Abstract

The high temperatures and low rainfall levels characterizing the Guadalentin river basin cause both a climatic dryness in more than the 60% of the region, and marked evaporationtranspiration processes surpassing 900 mm annually in the highest mountainous areas and 1.200 mm in the rest of the region (NAVARRO HERVÁS, 1989, 1991). In order to refine this parameter a series of dryness indices have been applied based on the correlation between temperature and rainfall leveL -hypothesizing that high temperatures correlate to evaporation-transpiration processes (LANG, DE MARTONNE, EMBERGER, GIACOBBE, and THORNTHWAITE). These indices permit a more precise delimitation of the arid areas. This study also details some of the most common techniques traditionally used in collecting torrent and subterranean water, thus palliating water shortage
