Abstract

Foreign immigration is a new phenomenon in the Region of Murcia. Immigrant population reached the number of 189.053 in 2006 and a quarter of them (24,51%) had settled down in the municipality of Murcia. There are evident differences regarding number, origin and rate of immigrant population in its distribution along the 885,9 square kilometres, 27 districts and 54 dependent towns that make up the municipality of Murcia. More than 100 different nationalities are present in Murcia, but nearly half of the immigrants are either from Morocco or Ecuador. There is also an outstanding Ukranian community and some other significant groups, including people from Bolivia, Colombia and Bulgaria.
