Abstract

The recent climatic development in the Iberian Peninsula has included persistent droughts and catastrophic rainfall on an unusual scale, in terms of both frequency and the extent of the territory affected. The violent disturbance, which is the object of this study and which hit the Spanish Mediterranean southern seaboard from 13 th to 15 th November 1989, is a further instance of the increase in climatic anomalies which have appeared successively in the eighties, a decade rich in strange meteorological occurences, in different parts of the planet. In the province of Malaga the Alora Estación and Cartama weather stations for several hours registered 210 and 230 mm., respectively. The city of Malaga registered 140 mm. in an hour and a half of stormy precipitation, and subsequently experienced flooding in the eastern sector with water from the River Guadalhorce.
