THE ROLE OF SMALL CATCHMENTS ON THE INUNDATIONS OF THE FLOODPLAINS OF MURCIA: THE RAMBLAS GARRUCHAL AND LOS ROMOS FOLLOWING THE RAINFALL ON 4 NOVEMBER 1987
Abstract
The river regularization works on the Segura have an unquestionable effect on the control of inundations in its floodplain. In spite of this infrastucture, it has not been possible o avoid flooding totally, nor does it seem possible that this will be achieved finally beause of the characteristics of the diverse nature of the region. The inability to regulate all the small channels which flow into the floodplain, following high hurly intensities, is what provoked the lat floods in the Murcian Region. In the case of the Ramblas Garruchal and Los Romos, with catchment 168 areas of 43'2 and 32'0 km2 respectively, these channels developed into torrents capable of inundating a large area of the lowland around Murcia in November 1987Downloads
