TROPICAL PERTURBATIONS IN THE NORTH ATLANTIC AND THEIR OCCURRENCE IN WESTERN EUROPE
Abstract
Following the high temperatures and low precipitation of july and august, the southern european region, characterised by a weakening of the zonal circulation reflected in practice by the disappearance of westerly winds in the low pressure systems, the activity of the westerlies is reiniciated in the autumn with copious rainfall. Albeit in very exceptional conditions, Atlantic depressions, sometimes very intense, can affect the synoptic region of Europe, unleashing very unpleasant weather, with strong winds surpassing 58 knots and heavy rainfall. Depressions, which were previously tropical cyclones originating in the tropical Atlantic, leave these warm waters following a parabolic clockwise course, are absorbed by the circulation of the westerlies in the temperate zone and are converted into undulating depressions in the Polar Front. In this paper the trajectories of tropical cyclones in the northern Atlantic have been studied during the period 1984 to 1987.Downloads
