Abstract

The lower area of the Basin of Guayalejo in the south of Tamaulipas, Mexico has benefited by the water that captures the “Reserva de la Biosfera El Cielo”, this work has as objective estimate the cost for hydrological environmental services for water use. Four sites to the cultivation of sugar cane were monitored. Statistical information was obtained in relation to the availability and the water use in the basin, for the analysis were applied the methods; changes in the production (agricultural use) and recovery value (potable and industrial use). The result showed that the pressurized irrigation systems had the higher cane yield and efficiency in the water use, Katanga site had a production of 126,25 t ha-1, on the campus Mexicali with 0.7 cm of table water can produce one ton of sugar cane. The analysis showed that the cost of hydrological environmental services for agricultural use is $0,39 per cubic meter of water used and for potable use the cost of recovery is $0,12 per cubic meter of potable and industrial water consumed.
