Abstract

The main aim of this paper is to analyse how population growth of the greatest Spanish metropolitan areas has changed in the last forty years (1970-2011). Therefore, using the Atlas Estadístico de las Áreas Urbanas definitions, 64 urban areas which have more than one municipality are studied. In each of the cases core city and periphery growth levels have been separately analysed so that an urban growth typology can be built. Paper mainly focuses on two phenomena, suburbanisation and foreign immigration, as they have both been the main elements defining recent urban growth transformations and have created clearly defined spatial patterns.
