Abstract

The Mexican territory is characterized by a high enviromental diversity due to geographical location, topography, climate, soil type, vegetation. In Mexico, the processes of land use change are derived from the interaction of various factors geographical, economic, political, social, demographic and cultural. The aim of this paper is identify and evaluate land use changes occurred in the watershed of the San Jose River, located in the municipalities of San Felipe del Progreso and San Jose del Rincon, in the Mexican Highlands, over the years 2000 and 2008. Arc Gis System and mathematical functions were used to calculate land use changes and evaluate losses of forested surfaces near to agricultural areas. The most significant change occurs in forest areas to rainfed agriculture.
