Economic situation and change in the uses of the soil in La Palma (Canary Island), the example of Tazacorte´s municipality
Abstract
The tertiary sector and, concretely, the tourism have constituted the axis that structures the Canary economy in the last decades. A process that, in competition with the agriculture, has not demonstrated of equal form in all the islands. In this perspective, we show here what has happened in the island of La Palma, where a profitable commercial agriculture, and therefore a scanty interest of the owners for the sectorial change, slowed down the penetration of the tourist phenomenon. For explaining this process, we use the example of Tazacorte’s municipality, one of the emblematic insular enclaves in the production of bananas and also one of the most active in the recent change of function of the territory.Downloads
