Abstract

This article analyzes the island of Gran Canaria as a biosphere reserve. This is an area of great natural and landscape values but it is affected by serious economic-demographic problems as a consequence of population stagnation and backwardness in the traditional activities. To deal with these issues we propose some programs which concentrate in solving the main troubles of this area to comply with sustainable development commitments which go with its international status.
