Abstract

Sources and springs are a vital Natural Heritage resource in Mediterranean semi-arid environments, because water is so scarce. These water points have played a marked role in establishing the rural populations as suppliers of water for domestic and agricultural uses.

The springs are also noted for their scenic beauty and their ecological, cultural and historical values. They are good sustainability indicators of the land on account of the use and management made of the aquifers that feed them.

Their degradation and disappearance suppose long lasting problems.

This paper is a study of some of the most important upwellings of the northwest area of the Region of Murcia.
