Abstract

This article aims in first place to provide significant information about Josefa Soto Aranda, the first Spanish dancer to succeed on the American stage in the middle of the nineteenth century. During this period Soto performed as a principal ballerina in the interpolations of operatic, musical, dramatic and comical plays in the most important theatres of the country. By then, popular dances started to take up a leading spot on the billboards, and Sevillan artist’s acts will be an important example of Spanish and bolero dancing within a repertory possessing a strong Spanish emphasis. The article also provides visual documents of interest and a chronological table of Soto’s performances between 1845 and 1859.
