WHAT KIND OF NURSING CARE DO IMMIGRANTS GOING IN INTERNAL MEDICINE NEED?
Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Immigrants can find themselves in a situation of vulnerability and there is a need for the societies receiving them to guarantee basic human rights as healthcare. AIMS: 1.- To ascertain the immigrants care needs admitted into Internal Medicine. 2.- To detect possible problems in relationships with the immigrant. MATERIAL AND METHODS. . We used a retrospective descriptive study. . Period: 2005 year . Sample: patients discharged from Internal Medicine. . The data were collected from the computer program Zaineri, manually processed, and expressed in percentages and absolute numbers. RESULTS: . 34 persons were studied. . 44.12 % required care for problems in heat regulation. . 41% required observational care for pain. . 20. 5% required care for respiratory needs. . 20.5% required care for the need to eliminate. . 11.7% had social problems. . 35.29% had problems in communicating caused by lack of knowledge of the local language. CONCLUSIONS: 1.- The immigrant consults the doctor for similar reasons to those of the rest of the local population, adapts easily to the healthcare setting and abides by the healthcare protocols the same as anyone else. 2.- We did not find a lower guarantee of care administration due to problems in communication. The healthcare team makes an effort to understand the peculiarities of the immigrant patient. 3.- We, nurses, have detected some problems that are not reflected in the care plans because the Zaineri program lacks appropriate options to record them. This does not mean that the needs were not covered, and for this reason we suggest areas to improve the program.Downloads
