Abstract

The objective of the present study is to find out the nursing experience in caring deaf people and/or people with hearing deficiencies. The methodology used had a descriptive and exploratory character with a qualitative analysis. The subjects studied were five nurses: three (03) from a hospital institution of medium importance, one (01) from a Basic Health Care Unit, and one (01) from a hemodialysis clinic, all the institutions being situated in a city of the interior of Río Grande do Sul, Brazil. The data were collected through a semistructured interview. After data analysis and discussion, they were grouped according to the objectives of the study, resulting in four topics: I  The nursing experience in caring for deaf people and/or people with a hearing deficiency; II  The feelings of the nurse when caring for deaf people and/or people with a hearing deficiency; III  The type of communication between the nurse and deaf people and/or people with a hearing deficiency and last; IV  Reflections about caring for deaf people and/or people with a hearing deficiency. The results showed that nurses need to improve their knowledge regarding communication with deaf people and/or people with hearing deficiency so as to provide individualized care to this people. It is worth noting that nurses demonstrated concern for deaf and hearing deficient patients. However, they commented that during their academic and professional life they had not received specific information about caring for and communicating with deaf and/or hearing deficiency patients, which was the cause of limited knowledge. It shows the necessity of research and articles about the topic.
