EVALUATION OF THE PRESENCE OF BURNOUT SYNDROME IN CAREGIVERS OF ELDERLY PEOPLE
Abstract
This study was carried out with informal caregivers of elderly people aiming to identify the appearance of Burnout Syndrome in caregivers of dependent elderly people. This study also aims to know the social-cultural characteristics of caregivers in the family of the elderly people and their perception of the work of care giving. In this research 31 caregivers participated and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) was the instrument used. Of the caregivers, 83.6 % were women, and 64.5 % were daughters of the cared for elderly. The analyses of the MBI suggested that the signs of the disease found were higher than in health professionals regarding “emotional stress” and “depersonalization.” In reference to “job achievement,” the score was satisfactory; indicating the relation between the elderly and a family member caregiver can be favorable to the non-appearance of the disease for the cultural and affective aspects involved.Downloads
