MIDWIVES WITH DIPLOMAS FIGHT FOR THE PRACTICE OF OBSTETRICS IN RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL
Abstract
A social historic study of the symbolic fight of the obstetrics practice carried out by the midwives with diploma between 1832-1876 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Documental sources were found in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, Brazil. They were analyzed and discussed based on some concepts of Pierre Bourdieu. The results of the study showed the transformation of the Medical Department of Rio de Janeiro in the training of midwives who after graduated began to work in their field. Additionally, they expanded their operational range with the creation of Maternal Institution. In this sense, obstetricians, by way of legal mechanism, began to administrate these institutions for the advancement of medicine in the same way that women were seen as objects of study.Downloads
