Abstract

Tryptophan is one of the essential amino acids, considered to be an LNAA (Large Neutral Amino Acid) by its chemical structure. According to FAO, its RDA is about 17 mg/kg/day in breast-fed babies, 12.5 in children since two until three years old, and 3.2 in adults. There is about 16 mg/g protein/litre of milk in mother’s milk. Their circulating levels are influenced by the diet, especially if it is rich in carbohydrates, but containing poor protein (RCPP). Starting from this amino acid, its anabolism is directed to indoleamines (serotonin and melatonin) and to vitamin B3. And the catabolism goes to indole acetic acid, kynurenine and xanthurenic acid. L-Tryptophan is used as a hypnotic agent in humans, against sleep disorders, and a rise of the non-REM phase was seen after its administration. This action is reflected on the decrease of sleep latency. The most efficient therapeutic concentration used is between 2-5 g/day, and it was administered just before the start of the night-time rest. Both its importance in the formula milk enrichment, as well as time and dose-dependence in different studies have also been contrasted in a scientific and clinical way.
