Abstract

This is a qualitative research conducted at the University Hospital (HU) of The Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) during the meeting with parents and their newborn babies, as a complementary, educational and interdisciplinary activity. It was used as a method for data collection the participants’ narratives. The main objectives were to get to know and reflect upon the trajectory that parents and relatives went through, and also to evaluate the importance of promoting educational activities with pregnant women and pregnant couples along the pregnancy process. In this study, from the narratives presented, the following categories emerged and were analyzed according to different authors: experiencing labor and the childbirth process; showing the involvement of the women’s partners; reflecting upon the hospital assistance; building up new roles; expressing the experiences learnt from childbirth and reviewing the presence of family and friends. These meetings are considered an important support for the new family realized through the sharing of experiences, fears and anxieties experienced in the childbirth process, besides being a space for the reflection on motherhood and fatherhood and ways of facing this new reality.
