BIO-SAFETY IN CHILDBIRTH ASSISTANCE: AN ANALYSIS OF NURSING ACADEMICS’ KNOWLEDGE.
Abstract
The objective in this exploratory-descriptive study was to analyze the Nursing Academics’ knowledge regarding bio-safety and their personal protection during childbirth assistance. The survey was made in the Nursing Course of the Public University in Ceará, during October 2003. The sample is made up of 14 Academics, with 12 being female; 11 Academics quoted transversal disciplines that they contemplated in their subject matter and bio-safety measures; all of them defined bio-safety, however, with different approaches. In relation to standard precautionary measures carried out by the Academics in the period of perinatal assistance, only 05 (five) mentioned hand-washing, 08 (eight) referred to care with perforation-cutting instruments, only 02 (two) mentioned superficial decontamination and all cited the use of EPI-Personal Protection Equipment. The lack of guidance on the occupational risks increases the vulnerability of the nursing worker, there is a need to improve the curricular structure with more in depth for bio-safety measures.Downloads
