PERSPECTIVES ON NURSING RESEARCH IN GUATEMALA.
Abstract
In order to support the advancement of nursing research in Latin America, it is important to understand how it is perceived and practiced in the context of individual countries, especially in countries where Bachelor’s and Master’s programs were established recently. This study examines the perceptions of Guatemalan nurses regarding the concept of research, applications of research in practice, priority research needs, barriers and facilitators, and research competencies and roles of different academic levels. The study design was qualitative exploratory and the data were collected through semi-structured interviews. Important themes that emerged through content analysis included: the potential contribution of research to the advancement of nursing practice, the need to create a Guatemalan knowledge base, institutional and personal barriers to conducting research, and the training of researchers in the newly established Bachelor’s and Master’s programs. The findings of this study indicate areas for potential collaboration with schools of nursing abroad to strengthen the development of nursing research in Guatemala.Downloads
