Abstract

Objective: This work is focused on the topic of blood donation taking as case of study blood donation in Galicia (Region in Northwest Spain) where blood policy is based on a public organization and where blood donation is altruistic (not paid), volunteer and universal (anonymous). Blood donation is here considered more than an individual decision leading to an altruistic response. Under a structural and ideological interpretation it is analyzed as alternative to ‘in motivation’ based models. Method: Biographical interviews were used to obtain the data and non linear models were used for the analyze (due to the nature of this case in which the data were dynamic behavioral courses). The pool was of 216 persons with different experiences on blood donating, being rejected and not donating. The pool was segmented according to the Galician social structure and the categories above indicated. Results: Three control parameters were discovered (certainty, aptitude and responsibility) and a state parameter (with four possible positions: donating, not donating, adonating and not adonating). Conclusion: Our aim is to show how decisions concerning blood donation can be considered a phenomenon based on supra-individual parameters, further than on ‘motivational’ personal grounds. It could also explain the limits of donation campaigns based on individual characteristics. A predictive model of donation behavior could be developed from these parameters.
