Abstract

Descriptive and explorative study with the following objectives: to know women care practice to the children at home and to describe the main belief and popular acts used by the mothers relatively to the umbilical cord care, administration of colic and breasting. Interviews were made with forty women that carried their children to leasure activities in a public square at a barrio called Leme, situated at the south zone of the municipality of Rio de Janeiro, during the weekends from May to July, 2004. It was optioned to apply a collection of date’s instrument as a questionnaire with closed questions. The results were presented with absolute and relative frequencies. It was concluded that the various forms of popular acts have its peculiar way of relative behavior to the care that is generally known by the members of cultures in the case of these mothers, but frequently unknown by the nurses with different culture baggage.
