DEVELOPMENT OF COMMUNITY NURSING IN ARGENTINA
Abstract
Considering the socio-demographic profile of Argentina in a globalized context and taking into account the world trends in public health, it has been necessary a Reform of the health area and the design of Nursing Policies. In some places of the country, community nurses are still absorbed by the dominant health model. While in others, they are moving towards a paradigm of professional practice oriented to health promotion. As a proof to this, we can mention: activities they develop as direct care providers, work with families, community groups, and their contributions to teaching, research and administration of services with new scopes. The paradigmatic transition in the health field offers new opportunities to nurses to work in different community areas (schools, dinning halls, clubs, NGOs, etc). A situation that should be profited in order to make visible the professional practice. The practice of a proactive leadership will enable the role of the nurse in the community area to be based on an integration conception and in a process of conceptual modernization which will support a new practice in Public Health. The community nurse as a health keeper should reexamine the role, truly valuing her practice. She will, therefore, question, analyze, rebuild or create new ways to be the leader of the health area on the basis of his/her own identity. In order to comply with this, her/his practice should be based on the following: • On Health as a value and on the meaning of caring and healing • On a collective focus valuing social diversity • On ethical basis at decision making points • On the purpose of the profession in health attention • On the efficiency of the different methods used at nursing services, based on the self-care attention models emphasizing interdisciplinary and inter-institutionally. • On the demonstration of the costs of nursing interventions, evaluating the quality, and prioritizing the evaluation of processes and results over the evaluation of structures.Downloads
