Abstract

Introduction: adverse events (AE) are part of human interactions that occur daily in the places where health care is delivered. Their identification is essential, especially in more vulnerable populations, as is the case of children.

Objectives: Identify the AE present in the attention of users of a pediatric hospital specializing in the care of children with chronic respiratory diseases.
Methodology: this study is descriptive, correlational and retrospective. We reviewed 115 medical records, income for the months between January 2006 and July 2007, extracted through a data collection form the EA reported, among other variables.
Results: in 15.7% of the children reported the occurrence of AE, in the 6.1% recorded the occurrence of two or more AE. AEs reported were: AE in medication administration falls and blows. Association was observed between the occurrence of AE and the number of days of hospitalization, time of day and month of the year. No association with age of the child.
Discussion: AE monitoring should be incorporated in a systematic and sustained in the process of health care for each child, involving every member of the health team. The nurse plays a vital role to achieve.
