Abstract

This is a descriptive, exploratory study with a qualitative approach. It was carried out in the school-hospital of Cuiabá-MT, Brazil. The objective of the study is to understand the meaning of the first bath given by the mother to her newborn, in a common lodging and under nursing supervision. The data collection was carried out through participatory observation and interview. The results show that new practices related to education in health should be implemented in order to give more confidence to the mothers, respected in their unique role, and a further enjoyment of the care of the newborn.
