Abstract

The worldwide scientific transformation, taking place, affects, not only the economics, social and cultural aspects in a country or its population, but also encompasses health issues. It is evident that in our daily medicine practice we can witness the use of new and novel ways of diagnostic and treatment that let us solve surprising situations and at the same time improve the quality of life of many patients. However, several problems have aroused at the same time, due to the use of these new technologies. Among all these problems there is the one related to human values. We will reflect upon this throughout the analysis of the role of the professional nurse who tries to give comprehensive care to the patients in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (“UCI Pediatrica”). In order to achieve it, we made an analysis of our experience in the ICU using an extensive bibliography search for the subject. It is an area where we find patients with devices that affect their normal human interaction that is why we decided to study it. Nevertheless, the professional nurse needs to be ready and willing to listen, understand and answer the patients´ demand for help, always keeping in mind the possible reactions to the reality nurse-patient-family, which is the focal point of the values. In this sense, we can replace through this reflection the technology oriented solutions, if there are any, by ones that are more rational where human values are the key to our practice of professional nurse.
