Abstract

The study of the ownership of the land, of the water and of the fann animals in the Cartagena area at the beginning of the Modern Age leads us to the following conclusions. The nobility, especially members of the Town Council, merchants -mainly from Genova- and men of the Law and administrators, are. generally speaking. the big landowners. They formed the powerful elite which in some cases succeeds in amassing large country estates which became inherited family seats with associated feudal possessions. and occasionally a lordship of the manor.
