EL DEBATE DEL SPANGLISH: ARGUMENTOS LINGÜÍSTICOS, SOCIALES Y CULTURALES EN TORNO A SU LEGITIMIDAD

Abstract

The aim of this article is not exclusively to describe the nature, development and characteristics of Spanglish as the Hispanic communities jargon in the U.S. but to offer an overview of both its rate of public acceptance and the recognition of its legitimacy at the linguistic, social and cultural levels. A revision of the currem situation of this language phenomenon and the particular ideological positions involved in it will he outlined. This will explore the different arguments and opinions partaking in the debates aroused regarding the consequences that the consolidation and permanence of Spanglish may generate. Those eventual consequences are foreseen in terms of the integrity of the languages involved, the social and cultural effects on its users, and the potentiality of this hybrid language for becoming (un)officially recognised and supported.
