Abstract

The contributions of research in Antropological linguistics and Ethnolinguistics on the nature of language as a social tool and speaking as a cultural practice have established a domain of inquiry that invites everyone to rethink the interrelationship of language, culture, and society. Opposed to the attempts to isolate the study of language from other disciplines, these linguistic fields have moved the influence of culture, history, environment and society on language into the spotlight of attention. Its application to FLT springs from the evidence that learning the language of a foreign culture will not be limited to the learning of vocabulary and syntax, but also includes the learning of communicating with native speakers. From this perspective proficiency in the mastering of a foreign language relies on learners familiarity with its culture and society, that is the development of their sociocultural competence. The aim of this paper is to evidence the role these interrelationship play in the context of FLT.
