Abstract

This paper deals with ghost stories written by women in the first part of the twentieth century. It aims at examining issues of identy, genderand textualitv in a number of women writers who used the ghost story as a potentially subversive and liminat area between the real and the unreal, art, life and death. A literature of disorienting extremes, these ghost stories can be viewed as Modernist-Gothic in descubring the fragmentation of the modern mind and undermining any claim of elucidating a final, empirically verifiable psychological truth.
