Abstract

Because of both the basic allegorical conception and the marked topicality of Middleton's A Game at Chess, un understanding of it calls for a familiarity with historical and contextual factors. However, the satirical content of the play can be better appreciated by examining Middleton's innuendo and double meanings. This paper aims to demonstrate that wordplay in this comedy is not just a collection of loose witty puns, but reveals itself as deliberate and consistent, thereby contributing to un additional conception of the play as a hunt, and permitting a more direct and down-to earth satire than would be possible in un abstract chess allegory.
