Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine one of the main devices in the reading comprehension process: laical inferencing. First, the main theories on reading comprehension models are discussed in order to identify the elements that rake pan in this process. The role of laica1 inference as a key element for giving cues to the reader that allow him/ her to reach the meaning of words in the L2 text is emphasized. Lexical inference is what permits to link the schemata existing in the individual mental lexicon with the laical information in print. Once the elements and processes have been identified and analysed, several pedagogical implications can be drawn so that the L2 learners can improve their abilities and use more effective techniques when they face the reading of an L2 text.
