Abstract

The aim of this article is to apply Gurnham 'S mental models theory to the analysis of J. M. Synge's most controversial plays. By means of this it will be simpler to deduce through which processes of interpretation the audience at the Abbey Theatre rejected the subverted representation of a traditionally Irish rhetoric, which, on this occasion, had been embodied by the inversion of the very core of Ireland's most sacred stereotypes. The reason of the failure of this institution must be subsequently found in the clash between several coextensive mental models.
