Abstract

Current society is undergoing a process of significant changes in the field of social realities, among other reasons due to the current financial, economic and social crisis, in which situations of shortage have changed and new forms of poverty, as well as specific social phenomena, have been generated. We started this research considering that a thorough knowledge on the social reality and social problems may increase the level of efficiency in the measures that intend to eradicate these problems. For this purpose, we have approached the phenomenon of social exclusion and also trends in social work and social services in two different European Union countries: Germany and Spain, representing two societies with different social welfare models and unequal involvement to the crisis. Therefore, the main goal of this paper is presenting the results of a research that analyze emerging phenomena- related to poverty and social exclusion- in Spanish and German households. Besides, we extract and analyze similarities and differences. This has been achieved by a combination of qualitative and quantitative methodology through a literature review, document analysis of secondary sources and analysis of in-depth interviews to experts in the two contexts analyzed.
