Abstract

The Association of Social Work Directors of the Spanish Universities (Conferencia de Directores de Trabajo Social CDTS) has developed different activities in the last years with the purpose to ameliorate de development and management of practical work (field placements). There were three activities to be specially considered: A survey done about practical work with the participation of all the universities in Spain in charge of Social Work Studies, the organization of a Conference about practical work in Social Work Education and the development of a document about “Quality Standards for practical work and field placements in the Bachelor of Social Work”.

The aim of the survey was to know in more detail how practical work was planned and organized by the Universities involved in Bachelor of Social Work Studies. Once having the results of the survey, in June 2012 there was organized a Conference about practical work in Social Work in Santiago de Compostela. The content of the Conference was to present the results of the study and to reflect upon supervision of practical work. At the same time, a rich exchange was done with several universities that presented their experiences and good practices. One of the main conclusions from this Conference was the need to work out a series of recommendations and quality standards for practical work. It was a new challenge for the CDST to be able to create a document with the aim to contribute and give support to the implementation of practical work which could help in the accreditation processes of the new Bachelor in Social Work curricula.

As a result of this process, a document of recommendations was developed with the inclusion of quality standards of practical work focused in the design, organization, planning, implementation and evaluation of practices in social work education. This document has the aim to orientate and guide the universities and to unify quality criteria and the minimum aspects that should be considered in practical work in the Bachelor of Social Work.
