Abstract

In this article, we discuss three challenges facing social work as a scientific discipline and profession in the 21st century. First, in the sphere of academia, it is essential to strengthen the scientific foundations un- derlying social work by establishing rigorous and replicable intervention protocols and promoting scientific research. Secondly, in the specialized fields of the discipline, it is necessary to contribute to the development of community social work in our welfare societies; particularly in a context of economic crisis and the mystification of neo-Darwinian individualism. Finally, we must take greater account of specific vulnerable groups and address the invisibility of young people in our welfare state.
