CITY OF SEGORBE LIVESTOCK COMPETITION; EVOLUTION AND ZOOTECHNICAL AND MORPHOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MORE VALUED FIGHTING BOVINE
Abstract
The livestock competition held in Segorbe Bullfighting Week was born in 1985, it is the oldest (36 editions) and one of the most important in Spain. The objective of this work is to determine its evolution to the current format with the changes that have arisen in order to adapt these "bous al carrer" to the tastes of society and animal welfare, and to assess certain zootechnical characteristics of the animals that participate in these shows, according to the opinion of their breeders. A positive evolution of the contest is observed, since it has become national, the number of festivities has increased and the conditions for animal welfare have improved, by reducing the times for the cattle contest. For the knowledge of the behavioral characteristics of the cows and bulls that participate in the contest, surveys were carried out on the most successful breeders, the main protagonists of their selection. There are numerous crosses of different breeds of the bullfighting used by livestock, mainly the Navarra and Gamero-Cívico breeds. Regarding the general behavior of the cattle in the contest, the cows finish off in burglars and work the obstacles, especially the stairs, with a lot of mobility always looking for the roller, with fixity and without refusing the fight; the bull on spikes charges, is mobile, does not run away from the pressure of the rollers and hits the bars at the same time that he promptly goes to the appointments and, the “embolado” bull moves a lot, runs through the entire bullfighting area and lets himself be seen, has cunning with good starts and herds in thieves. Morphologically speaking, the cows are strong with good body condition and large horns, the bulls at points are large, with presence, very good aplomb and with a developed horns; likewise, the “embolado” bull is large, presenting developed “morrillo” and horns.
