The impact of European Union law in the labor sphere
Jurisprudential Review
Abstract
Spain's assumption of the Presidency of the Council of the European Union from July 1 to December 31, 2023, will allow for progress in the so-called European Social Shield, the highest exponent of the European welfare state, under the motto: a closer Europe. This role will enable the development of the principles enshrined in the Action Plan of the European Pillar of Social Rights (adopted by the Commission in March 2021), promoting social dialogue, decent work, and the social economy, and driving the implementation of the principle of equality between women and men. European social policy, which sets the course for national legislative and jurisprudential action, aims to improve the conditions of workers, combat job insecurity, and address crucial issues such as the fight against discrimination, gaps in the digital era, fraud in temporary contracting, and the management of working time arrangements. Undoubtedly, the impact of European Union Law on the national landscape plays an extremely relevant role, currently standing as the benchmark in safeguarding the guarantees of the social shield for workers.
