Abstract
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the anti-diabetic activity of aqueous extract of Atriplex halimus L leaves in diabetic model rats. Glycaemia, weight loss, volume of water consumption, biochemical parameters and histological study were used to evaluate the anti-diabetic activity.
Findings show that the treatment with Atriplex halimus L extract presents a significant reduction of blood glucose levels in rats of groups D100 (dose 100 mg / kg) and D200 (dose 200 mg / kg) compared with diabetic group and protect rats from diabetic complications, these results were confirmed by the histological study in pancreas which indicate improvement in Islets of Langerhans of rat treated with this plant extract . Atriplex halimus L appears to be a promising plant for further preclinical and clinical trials in type 1 diabetes.
