Abstract

The polychaete worms found in the deep-sea hydrothermal vents are specialized in the exploitation of chemolithotrophic bacteriae. A gasohydrothermal vent located in a shallow Posidonia oceanica meadow was studied in the Gulf ofNaples. The vent area appears as a white film of sulfuroxidizing bacteria in dead rhizome of Posidonia oceanica. The polychaete worms (43 species) collected from this shallow vent are characteristic of coastal environments. Prevailing suspension-feeder species opposite deposit-feeder and carnivorous species. The specializated polychaeta from deep-sea hydrothermal vents are replaced by opportunists species able to exploit chemosynthetic and photosynthetic production both.
