Abstract

Feeding ecology of the Golden- Breasted- Woodpecker Colaptes rnelanochloros. The results of a study about the diet of the Golden- Breasted- Woodpecker (Colaptes melanochloros) based on the analysis of the 33 stomach contents of specimens captured during 1984- 1987 are presented. The purposes of the study were to supply data on habits of the species though the annual cycle, looking for temporal differences of the diet and the composition amplitude of the niche dimension as well as document the preys size and the dayly nthm of the feeding activity. The results indicate a carnivorous diet, being the ant Iridomyrmex humilis the most important species aamong a total of 15 taxonomic entities. The trophic amplitude of the niche varied little seasons (2.04 at spring, 1.64 at summer, 2.07 at autumm and 2.31 at winter). Regarding the dayly nthm of feeding activity, it was obsewed a linear decreasing pattern between the 09:OO and 17:OO hs.
