Abstract

An anatomical and morphological comparative study between Lithothamnion corallioides (P Crouan & H Crouan) P Crouan & H Crouan and Phymatolithon calcareum (Pallas) Adey & McKibbin from two maërl beds of Ría de Arousa (NW Iberian Peninsula) is carried out using optical and scanning electron microscopy. The aim involves the search of clear and effective morphological features which help us with the identification of both species in the current studies about the location of maërl beds along Galician coast. According to literature, we confirm that it is feasible the identification of L. corallioides due to the development of terete and thin branches whose thickness is less than 1,8 mm; whereas the branches of Phymatolithon calcareum are thick, about 1,5 mm of diameter with compressed tips. Tetrasporangial conceptacles were detected in both species which represents the second observation for Galicia. However the tetrasporangial measures of Galician maërl are different from those pointed out by some authors.
