Abstract

This study analyses the site level relationships between fish condition and environmental variables in Luciobarbus sclateri along the longitudinal river gradients of the Segura basin (SE Iberian Peninsula). The residual index Kr (obtained from the residual values of the mass-length relationship) was used to test for differences in fish condition between sampling sites and their relationships with environmental variables at macrohabitat level, mesohabitat level and fish community. Fish condition differed at site level and longitudinal axis level (Segura river versus Mundo river). Condition is related to longitudinal gradient (river bank quality and ecological status), the intra- and interspecific interactions, the exotic fish relative abundance and fish refuge quality.
