Abstract

In this article the author analyses three of the most important 15th century texts that can be identified with the so-called «princes’ mirrors» genre, pedagogical treatises aimed at the heirs to the throne. Specifically, she examines Vergel de los príncipes byRodrigo Sánchez de Arévalo (Ahmed at the recently crowned Henry IV), Jardín de las nobles doncellas by Fray Martín Alonso de Córdoba (aimed at the future Isabel I) and Diálogo sobre la educación del príncipe don Juan by Alonso Ortiz (in a clear reference to the Catholic Monarchs’ hypothetical heir). The evolution of these texts reveals a humanistic influence, which becomes more and more important with time, and a highly differentiated treatment according to the sex of the person the work is addressed to.
