Abstract

This essay show the common dependency for Donoso Cortés and Maeztu on the medieval model of liberty as obedience, which lacks the modern sense of liberty as autonomy. The image of man based on the consciousness of the past and religious repression made political repression unnecessary by showing the contingent character of the State. We can then understand the reactionary critique of liberalism, which points out the paradox of a State that must posit since Hobbes omnipotent and irresistible force to guarantee the liberty of the citizen.
