Abstract

In this article we analyse the professional profiles associated with the recently created degree of Sciences of Labour, and we propose its inclusion in the Spanish National Classification of Occupations (C.N.O.), in order to set a correspondence between the educational qualifications and the jobs in the labour market. The definition of the competencies related to this career is an urgent need for both the academic and practitioners in this field, as it will allow us to orientate the formal academic curriculum towards the requirements of the Spanish market. Further, a systematic taxonomy of the functions connected with the profile of “Specialist in Labour Affairs” is suggested, and a specific proposal for the new C.N.O. is put forward in the following pages. The methodology suggested in this paper might also be generalised to other university careers, its ultimate goal being to facilitate the insertion of young graduates into active and working life. In the present framework of convergence within the European Union , where academic teaching must be closely related to the competencies to be learned by the students, the discussion of the process addressed to define these competencies may be of general interest, not only for the degree of Sciences of Labour but also for other University studies.
