Abstract

In the last decades the historiography dedicated to the study of leprosy, lepers and leperhouses in the Middle Ages has developed several innovative and interesting perspectives. The following article will explore some of them in relation to the portuguese scenario in the 14th and 15th centuries. Among other aspects, the main objective is to draw attention to the notion of leper and to the different factors that should be taken into consideration when the historian observes the sick individual. In fact, the diversity and complexity of the documented situations demands not a simplistic and generalist approach (leper as excluded) but a survey that doesn’t exclude the characteristics that define the leper besides the leprosy itself.
