Abstract

J. Caro Baroja argued that the troubles between the Visigothic and Merovingian kingdoms and the Basques, described in sixth- and seventh-century sources, were due to the Basques’ feeble Romanization. This idea has been accepted by most of the historians who have dealt with this issue. However, the acceptance of such a view necessarily implies a methodology typical of the first half of the twentieth century which cannot be considered valid any longer. This legacy has hindered research advances in this field, which, as a result, is still dominated by the perception of the inhabitants of late antique Vasconia as an under-Romanized population.
