Abstract

Taking the beginnings of the Valencian trade expansion as a reference point, this piece of work analyses the economic relationships between the Crown of Aragón and North Africa during the fourteenth century. Various administrative documents have been used in order to focus attention on different aspects of these trade movements, such as the nature of the objects traded, the sales strategies of the merchants and even the routes of travel and ports used for transport. The study of these trade routes and the discovery of the presence of Valencian agricultural products in North African territories helps us to understand why merchants from the city of Valencia soon became involved, revealing the importance of these markets in the early development of Valencian commercial activities
